A Climax of Blue Power is an excellent roughie flick as it combines hardcore porn with a storyline that is actually interesting. The story is not exactly Shakespeare, of course, but naturally most people will be tuning in for the porn and the story helps to ensure that it actually has some point, rather than just being a collection of random sex scenes, and that does benefit the film immensely. The film is somewhere between a porn flick, a cop flick and a psycho flick and the lead character is a man named Eddie; a security guard who gets his kicks during his off-hours by posing as a police officer and picking up young prostitutes. After being given a run down of what will happen to them now that they've been caught, Eddie then offers to let the girls go if they'll agree to give him a free ride - which invariably leads to a torrent of abuse for the girls. This goes on for a while until one day, while out and about, Eddie witnesses a woman kill her husband. This has an effect on the "moral and upstanding" man and after mulling over what to do; he decides to deal out his own punishment...

The film was obviously cheaply made and naturally this has lead to a very gritty and downtrodden atmosphere, which bodes well with the hardcore sex. The sex definitely is hardcore and director Lee Frost (who previously directed odd porno-noir The Pick-Up and dismal Nazisploitation trash Love Camp 7) definitely leaves nothing to the imagination as we get to watch the lead character have his way with various female members of the cast. The sex is gritty just like the atmosphere though it well filmed and largely very erotic also. The acting does leave a lot to be desired, although Jason Carns is thoroughly convincing in the lead role. The film all boils down to the scenes at the end where we get to see the lead have his way with the murderess he witnessed earlier on and these are the best parts of the film. The film takes a bizarre turn and the sex scene towards the end is very brutal. Overall, A Climax of Blue Power certainly wont be everyone's cup of tea; but if you like your rough seventies porn with a story; this is probably one of the better examples. Recommended.

The director himself points out on IMDb that CHINA DOLL is notable as Vanessa Del Rio's film debut. Other than the usual Costello fetishes, this is a minor opus.

Opening features his usual stealing of the CHINATOWN theme by Jerry Goldsmith to introduce this non-adventure of private eye Mickey Flynn, a very poor ancestor of Costello's Dan McCord gumshoe. The search is for a missing china doll taken from a store. In the DVD-R reissue by Something Weird on Vol. 67 of its Dragon Art Theater series, there's a big bait & switch: the doll has been taken by a beautiful young blonde woman, who goes topless but never gets involved in any of the sex scenes. Original version was reportedly half an hour longer.

Vanessa Del Rio pops up as Nadja, part of an erotic dance team. She displays Costello's favorite fetish, performing fellatio on two guys at once in a position SC loves to film but which oddly never caught on with other filmmakers. Shaun likes this gimmick so much he repeats it later in an orgy, namedropping (or wishful thinking) at Peter Max's pad. Vanessa also has a double penetration scene, quite a debut.

General silliness and in-jokes include the doll supposed to contain $250,000 worth of "dilythium crystals" - I guess Shaun was a trekker.

This film does point up a key difference between softcore and hardcore porn, probably unintentionally. The visuals are basically "cock-centric", in that even though there are some attractive women in the cast the focus is on the male member most if not all of the time. I recall this being a big issue back in the day, as a large segment of the male audience was more interested in concentrating on the female anatomy, as is inevitably the case in softcore cinema.

The Fires Down Below starts off promising indeed. A handheld camera tracks threateningly around a Victorian sitting room while eerie tribal music plays on the soundtrack. "My life is so empty since Brian was killed in Viet Nam," we hear the young woman complain in voice-over. Finally, she gets up and faces out the window with her back to the camera. She calls aloud for her lost lover, begins to get horny, and caresses herself. Unable to stand the tension any longer, she finally sits on a nearby stool, spreads her legs, and rubs her hairy muff to orgasm.

So far, so good. The tension is broken, however, by the sound of a phone ringing. The caller is Chuck, an army buddy of the chick's dead husband. She invites him over, obviously still hot in the pants, and quickly manages to maneuvers the guy into the sack. Referring to him by her dead husband's name (psycho!), she gives Chuck a good going over then offers to let him move into her pad (the better to keep the goods within reach).

Chuck, however, turns out to be a lot less innocent than he looks and Lila soon catches him in a 3-way with another couple. She's pissed, but before the crisis can be completely resolved, the story cuts to another phone call, this time from Lila's old girlfriend, Janine. She and her Australian-accented husband drop in for a visit and wind up spending the night (which looks an awful lot like the day) having sex in the guestroom. Out in the hallway, Lila hears the couple making love. She approaches the door and begins rubbing herself. The tension is terrific, it's palpable. Will she enter the room and join them...?

FLOSSIE, sometimes attributed to the poet Algernon Charles Swinburne (though without the slightest evidence for the claim) is the "Deep Throat" of the Victorian era. It is briefer and less floridly written than most Victorian erotica. It has the virtue, rare in these novels, of coming directly to the point. Captain Archer, the narrator of the novel, is an experienced man of thirty-five when he meets fifteen-year-old Flossie while strolling in Piccadilly. He is immediately struck by the size of her breasts, and is happy when he receives a note from her guardian. Miss Eva Letchford, encouraging him to become Flossie's companion because the girl has fallen in love with him. But Flossie has promised Miss Letchford that her hymen will remain intact. Scenes of the hardcore set are interspersed with bawdy vignettes involving other cast characters. One is a sendup of Casanova on the prowl; the second takes a ribald look at clerics and cops. The last one involves a mini-orgy on some forsaken beach in which the participants slobber gooey cakes all over each other. Revolting. Pic's original title, incidentally, was "Penetration."
